“Search and Self Discovery” Art Exhibit
The Prairie Arts Council welcomes the Basement Art League of Princeton as the members present a comprehensive display of artwork during the month of August, beginning with an opening reception for the artists from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 7 in the gallery of the Prairie Arts Center in Princeton. Entitled “Search and Self Discovery,” the art exhibit will showcase the original work of the six members of the group. Led by Vicki Giehl, the group meets once a week in her basement, which explains the origin of the group’s name. Mrs. Giehl is a retired Princeton Elementary art teacher. The other members are: Delores Angel, Jean Gewin, Marty Hines, Donna Pfeiffer, and Kristina Giehl.
The Basement Art League has existed for over 12 years, and all of the women have accomplished art on their own, in workshops, and within the present group setting. On display will be traditional forms of art media including acrylic, oil, and watercolor paintings; colored pencil; pastel; pencil drawing; and ceramics, showing many different styles and techniques. Also featured will be examples of the group’s explorations into functional art such as painting on glass, boxes, wood, pottery, rocks, clothing, and original Christmas cards.
Exploration and experimentation are part of the group’s search to learn more about art, about the process of creativity, and about themselves. They appreciate the opportunity to use this exhibit as a means of education. Art is for everyone and should be accessible to all. Whether a person views art or creates art, the experience should be one of enrichment and enjoyment. “Art is best when shared!”
