Mynheer’s Motion

the
first
thing
I noticed
about the art of
Nicholas Mynheer
was the faces

such
sublime
expressions
with so few
lines
.

Here is
his painting of
the crucifixion

As I continued to
browse his website,
what struck me
was the
MOTION
in many of
his compositions
.

A few shown here are
scenes from the life of Jesus,
shown chronologically (according
to the Gospels), but many more of
his paintings and other art forms
are exhibited online here

I’ll add a few
scripture verses
before each one
to set the scene
:

And in the same region
there were shepherds out
in the field, keeping watch
over their flock by night
.
An angel of the Lord
appeared to them, and
the glory of the Lord shone
around them, and they
were filled with
great fear
.
The angel said to them,
“Fear not, for behold, I bring
you good news of great
joy that will be for
all the people
.
For unto you is born
this day in the city of
David a Savior, who
is Christ the Lord
.
Luke 2:8-11

And so John the Baptist
appeared in the wilderness,
preaching a baptism of
repentance for the
forgiveness
of sins
.
The whole
Judean countryside
and all the people of
Jerusalem went
out to him
.
Confessing
their sins, they were
baptized by him in
the Jordan River
.
Mark 1:4-5

At that time Jesus
came from Nazareth
in Galilee and was
baptized by John
in the Jordan
.
Mark 1:9

As Jesus was walking
beside the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers,
Simon called Peter
and his brother
Andrew
.
They were casting a
net into the lake, for
they were fishermen
.
“Come, follow me,”
Jesus said, “and I will
send you out to fish
for people.”

Matthew 4:18-19

“Sir,” the invalid replied,
“I have no one to help me
into the pool when the
water is stirred
.
While I am trying to get
in, someone else goes
down ahead of me
.
“Then Jesus said to him,
“Get up! Pick up your
mat and walk.”

At once
the man was cured;
he picked up his mat
and walked

John 5:7-9

“What do
you want me
to do for you?”
Jesus asked him
.
The blind man said,
“Rabbi, I want to see.”
“Go,” said Jesus, “your
faith has healed you”
.
Immediately he
received his sight
and followed
Jesus along
the road
.
Mark 10:51-52

When Jesus
entered Jerusalem,
the whole city was
stirred and asked,
“Who is this?”

The crowds answered,
“This is Jesus, the prophet
from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Matthew 21:10-11

On Herod’s birthday
the daughter of Herodias
danced for the guests and
pleased Herod so much that
he promised with an oath to
give her whatever she asked
.
Prompted
by her mother,
she said, “Give me
here on a platter the
head of John the Baptist.”

The king was distressed,
but because of his oaths and
his dinner guests, he ordered
that her request be granted
and had John beheaded
in the prison
.

But when he saw
the wind, he was afraid and,
beginning to sink, cried out,
“Lord, save me!”

Immediately
Jesus reached out
his hand and
caught him
.
“You of little faith,” he said,
“why did you doubt?”

Matthew 14:30-31

But I have
prayed for you,
Simon, that your
faith may not fail
.
And when you
have turned back,
strengthen your
brothers.”

But he replied,
“Lord, I am ready
to go with you
to prison and
to death.”

Jesus answered,
“I tell you, Peter, before
the rooster crows today,
you will deny three
times that you
know me.”

Luke 22:32-34

I have enjoyed seeing
these fresh perspectives
on familiar scenes
.

Thank You,
Mr. Mynheer
