My name is
Jack
.
For the
last few years
I’ve been trying to
paint images that
mean something
to me as a
Christian
.
I
hang
them high
up on the walls
around the ceiling
in my bedroom.
They serve as
reminders
to me
.
I have a
separate blog
for personal stuff
if you want to
see them

After showing a
painting at my local church,
one of the members gave me a
complete collection of magazines
:
“Christianity and the Arts”
1995-1999
This was a treasure, and
I’m grateful to have them.
(Thanks, Paula!)
Unfortunately,
when I went online to
research the sources,
many of them had
already vanished
…
but
I got a few hits
.
One of them
is a group called
Christians in the
Visual Arts
(CIVA)
I was excited to order
a book from their website:
“The Next Generation:
Contemporary
Expressions
of Faith”,
published
by the
Museum
of Biblical Art
.
I didn’t even
know that there
WAS a Museum
of Biblical Art
!!!
There’s not.
It closed.
Anyway, the
book introduces
forty-four modern
Christian Artists
working today
.

Being extremely
interested to learn more,
imagine my anticipation as
it finally arrived in the mail,
my joy in unwrapping it,
and my surprise
when I opened
it to the
First Page
and saw this
:
Surely,
Forward by Ena Heller,
there are some
artists today who tackle
religious subject matter
without rebuff or
controversy,
but their
art
is
derivative,
reflective of
a tired tradition,
deeply suspect, or
at least problematic.

What Was That
???
Maybe I don’t know
enough about
religious art
to respond,
but
I’m not
convinced
.
Moving forward,
I’m willing to invest
my time and energy
into creating a place
where you can see
some examples
and decide for
yourself
.

So,
welcome
to the
Gallery of
Biblical Art
-=< O >=-
If you think
a particular artwork
would be a good addition
(even if it is not modern work)
please leave a suggestion in
the comments area below
.
If you are an artist
and would like to submit
artwork to this collection,
it might be better to
start with an email
:
For it to be considered,
the subject of the art
must be related to
a scripture verse
or a biblical
concept
.
If it is not obvious,
you must be able
to explain it
.
I can include your
Artist Statement
in the blog post,
and maybe
include
a link
to your
artist page
if it makes sense
.

about
the phrase
“Christian Art”
Christian
art can mean
different things
to different people
:
Art made
BY a Christian
regardless of the content
(abstract, landscape)
Art made
FOR Christians
(like slides for a service)
Art with
Christian MEANING
as the subject or content
(“Madonna with Child”)
This collection
will feature
art where
THE
SUBJECT
has meaning,
regardless of the
personal beliefs
of the artist
.
Any
discussion
of Christian art
will have to consider
artwork related to the
Old Testament
.
Should
we exclude
Jewish Artists
working from
Hebrew Scripture
???
To avoid this distraction,
I won’t use the term
‘Christian Art‘
at all
.
I’m interested
in ART that
is related
to the
BIBLE
,
including art that is
based on Hebrew texts
that were written before
Jesus Christ was born
.
BIBLICAL
ART
.

Note:
although I am
enthusiastic about
showing & discussing
Biblical Art, I don’t know
anything about
Copyright Law
.
I’ll try
to find out
more about it,
but if you think
any of these
articles
cross
over
the line,
please leave
a comment or
send me an email.
I will edit or remove
it immediately
.

Thank you so much for thinking of us! You are such an inspiration! Keep up your GREAT work! Look forward to seeing you guys SOON! XOXO
Thanks, Julie. It’s kind of fun, and there’s plenty of material to choose from..!
Hey. I stumbled upon your blog as I was looking for art that depicted Revelation scenes, as I am leading it in a study right now. I LOVED your piece of the Throne Room. However, I could not credit you because I can’t find your name anywhere. (That’s a side note, really.)
This is an excellent and worthwhile pursuit, and I’m so excited to go through the pieces you’ve already chosen.
Thanks! amy d.
Hi Amy! Wow, thanks for telling me, I never realized my name isn’t anywhere. Well, my name is Jack Olson and the artwork you are referring to was made with liquitex soft body acrylic paint on 12″ x 12″ canvas board. Let me know if you need anything else (I’m new at this). Thanks for visiting!
I really like your website!
