F56 Theater: "I Do! I Do!"

I DO! I DO!, the classic musical about married life,
opens on Sunday afternoon, July 14

A large, old-fashioned bed, a man, and a woman. From this simple setting and two-person cast emerges an honest, sometimes angst-filled, humorous history of a 50-year marriage, including all of its exhilarating highs and infuriating lows. In the Festival 56 musical comedy production I Do! I Do!  July 14-26 at the Prairie Arts Center, audiences will watch Agnes and Michael prepare for their wedding and their wedding night. As time passes, the couple has a son and then a daughter, Michael’s career as a writer blooms along with his ego, and mid-life tensions develop between them. Both consider ending their marriage, but instead renew their love for one another. Eventually they become empty nesters, and they prepare to leave their long-time home for a small apartment. They look back and reminisce on a fulfilling life and beautiful family.

I Do! I Do! was first The Fourposter, a 1951 award-winning play written by Jan de Hartog. After a successful Broadway run with stars Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, the play was made into a film starring Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer, and then made into the 1966 musical I Do! I Dostarring Mary Martin and Robert Preston. Festival 56's production of I Do! I Do! is sponsored by Hornbaker Gardens and The Barn.
