Richter’s Randomizer

Since
I have been
thinking about
images generated
using artificial
intelligence
lately,
this is
just a short
comment on
a modern
work

The artist
Gerhard Richter
was awarded the 2002
commission to design
the south transept
window of the
Cologne
Cathedral

.

He used a
random number
generator to assign
one of 72 colors
to squares
of glass
.

Not completely
satisfied with the result,
he swapped a few colors
to achieve the effect
he wanted

was unveiled in
2007
